The Soul of Fenua Letters
Fenua Letters began with a box of old letters.
Years ago, when I lived thousands of kilometres away from my family, my grandmother wrote to me. Those letters were kept. I could hold them, reread them, and return to moments that would otherwise have disappeared.

Much later, living in French Polynesia, I began to notice something else. The life that had become ordinary to me — a fisherman crossing the lagoon before sunrise, a river close to home, animals filling the day, a turtle appearing unexpectedly in the night — was not ordinary everywhere.
I did not want to turn those moments into postcards. I wanted to tell what really happened.

So Fenua Letters became a way of paying attention again. I live the story first. Sometimes I only understand what it meant when I sit down to write it.

Then the story leaves the island on paper, crosses the ocean, and becomes something another person can hold, read, keep, and perhaps return to years later.
